Gilbert McCauley • Apr 22, 2023

Gilbert McCauley, professor of theater, was inducted into the School of Theatre Hall of Honor at his alma mater, Oklahoma City University, on March 30.

The Hall of Honor was introduced in 2013 to celebrate the contributions of distinguished alumni, former faculty and staff who have demonstrated a commitment to the continued growth and development of the OCU School of Theatre while making a significant impact on the local, state, national or international performing arts community. One of three alumni inducted for 2022-23, McCauley – who graduated from OCU in 1981 – was honored for his work as an acclaimed director and teacher.

Before coming to UMass Amherst, McCauley served as the producing artistic director of the Oakland Ensemble Theatre, resident director at Rites and Reason Theatre, and as an acting company member of the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. He is a former participant in the New York Drama League’s Directors Project.

He has also served on the theater faculties at the University of California, Berkeley; California State University; Dominguez Hills; the University of Michigan; Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island.

McCauley has directed off-Broadway and at regional theaters around the country, including Arena Stage, Arkansas Repertory Theater, Goodman Theatre, Majestic Theater, Old Globe Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Syracuse Stage and the National Theatre of Ghana.
